Thanks to this website a descendant of Fred Balmer, now living in New Zealand, has contacted us. On retiring from Appleby Fire Brigade he was presented with an inscribed silver cigarette case, “PRESENTED TO LIEUTENANT F T BALMER BY THE APPLEBY FIRE BRIGADE 1933 ” His grand daughter has generously offered to present this to the Society; we were pleased to give her a copy of the book about John Rigg and the Appleby Firemen although it doesn’t cover Fred’s time in the Brigade.

She also mentioned an intriguing story handed down in the family about Fred travelling to London with documents to present the case for Appleby to change its name in 1976 to preserve the link with Westmorland. Town council minutes document the decision to ask for this change in September 1975 but infuriatingly don’t mention it again except to report briefly in the following March that the change would take place on April 1st 1976! We need help on this one - more information welcome.
