An emergency evacuation of Appleby after the discovery of a buried shell casing was avoided with the help of the local newspaper, the Herald.

The casing, from the Warcop army base was found by workers repaving the cloisters following damage in the 2015 floods. Seventeen groups and organisations contributed memorabilia to the capsule which was prepared by the Appleby-in-Westmorland Society as part of the town’s millenium celebrations. Only the donors know what each group chose as its memento and very few people knew its exact wherabouts when it was buried. it was hoped the capsule would remain undisturbed for many years and then serve to remind its finder of how things were in the former county town of Westmorland in the years 2000.

With thanks to the Cumberland and Westmorland Herald.
